Meerut District is situated in the most fertile land in India, known as Deo. Bhoomi in the vedic Scriptures. It is flanked by two holy revers, Ganges in the east and Yamuna in the west. Carto-graphically It lies between 28.45? and 29.15? latitudes North and 78? and 79? longitudes east. Climate of the district is temperate, warm and bracing. Till recently the district was quite large in area with six Tehsils. But now it is very much reduced since two new districts of Baghpat and Ghaziabad have been carved out from it, leaving it with three tehsils, Meerut, Mawana and Sardhana. Its length from east to west is 93 km. and breadth 49 km. It is sub-divided into 12 administrative sub-divisions known as Blocks.
The city has its administrative grace being the circle Headquarter. It is also educational sub-head quarter with J.D.E. rank officer. It is also very famous for small scale industry of scissors, Khadi, Gazak & Rewari.

Historical Significance:
Historical Meerut enjoys the world fame of being the pioneer of 1st war of Independence which was triggered off on May 10, 1857 from the Kalipaltan Mandir, Meerut Cantt. The brave sons of Meerut and neighbouring districts stormed Delhi in a few days fighting tooth and nail.
Archaeological studies reveal that Meerut was one of the flourishing town in Sindhughati civilization. Some relics were discovered from the banks of River. Hindon near village Alamgirpur in 1958. At the time of Mahabharat, some 4000 yrs. ago, the town of Hastinapur on the bank of holy river Ganga, was the seat of Kaurava King Dhritrashtra. With the construction of an exquisite Jain temple, named Jumbu Deep, Hastinapur is developing into a tourist Centre.

Meerut district has a famous Christian pilgrimage at Sardhana where on all India Christian Mela is organized every year on 14th November. Christian devotees, from every nook & corner of India, come and beseech blessing from Mother Mary. The historical Kalipaltan Shri Temple has been gorgeously renovated and is worth visiting.

Educationally Meerut is also not behind any district. It has a full-fledged university, Degree Colleges, Medical College and Engineering Colleges. Meerut has the honour of holding one of the four regional offices of the U.P. Board of Secondary Education.
INTRODUCTION OF D.I.E.T.
Education is one of the essential factors in the progress and prosperity of a developing nation. Therefore it should be well planned at the national level. According to our National Education Policy 1986, a multipurpose composite educational institute was established at each district headquarter in 20 Distt. in the state in first phase in compliance with GO No. 210 Shiksha/ Diet/ 2678-98/89-90.
One such institute was opened on May 1989 at Chhota Mawana, 18 Km. from Meerut. It is housed in a spacious building where the old primary teacher's training school was running in the past. Its official name is District Institute of Education and Training or D.I.E.T. in short. The D.I.E.T. possesses 6.070 Hectare of land on which two educational blocks, one administrative block, two hostels, 27 teacher's quarters and principal bungalow are erected.
